The primary cause of caries, in the author’s thirty-year experience in an orphanage, is improper diet. Among the secondary causes are lack of proper dental care and endocrine disturbances. Caries can be controlled by balanced diet, persistent and intelligent care by the patient, twice-yearly dental ex­amination and correction of all defects by the dentist, and needed medical attention.
